The brief

Patients choose a private hospital on its doctors, its costs and how easy it is to get there, yet the leading sites put campaign carousels first. Few filter doctors by language or clinic day, three publish cost estimates, and none had a usable floor map. Malaysia’s healthcare advertising rules also limit what a hospital may say about itself.

What we shipped

A hospital website built like a lobby directory: a doctor finder with live clinic slots and booking, a screening package builder, procedure cost estimates that split hospital charges from doctors’ fees, an international centre in Bahasa Indonesia with a case board, floor plans with routes, a reviewed health library, a newsroom and careers, queue numbers with now-serving screens, ward visitor passes, and a staff desk whose changes reach the public pages, all within the advertising rules.

Built for: Private hospitals, specialist centres and clinic groups, and any healthcare provider that has to present doctors, prices and directions within strict advertising rules.

Behind the build

Researched first, then built

Before designing anything, we studied 15 hospital websites: ten Malaysian private hospitals and five leaders in Thailand, Singapore, the United States and India. We used their doctor finders, package pages and estimators. Nothing was copied. Each finding below changed a decision.

Studied (15)

  • Sunway Medical Centre
  • Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur
  • Prince Court Medical Centre
  • Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur
  • KPJ Healthcare
  • Subang Jaya Medical Centre
  • Thomson Hospital
  • Island Hospital
  • Mahkota Medical Centre
  • Beacon Hospital
  • Bumrungrad International
  • Mount Elizabeth
  • Mayo Clinic
  • Cleveland Clinic
  • Apollo Hospitals
  • What we saw

The Malaysian leaders put the same three or four tasks first, often under a campaign carousel, and on phones the tasks can fall below the fold.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

A lobby directory of tasks with building codes and the emergency row first, and no carousel anywhere.

  • What we saw

Wayfinding is scattered: tower labels on a photo, a level on a profile, counter moves in a pop-up. No site had a usable floor map.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

Codes on every doctor, centre and appointment, a section drawing of the campus, and floor plans with routes, with notices published from the staff desk.

  • What we saw

All fifteen have a doctor directory, but only two filter by language, two by gender, one by clinic day, and one lets you pick a slot.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

Filters for specialty, condition, twelve languages, gender, clinic day and time, site and centre, a next free slot, and booking with a reference and tracking.

  • What we saw

Only three sites publish procedure estimates, and deposit and guarantee-letter steps are buried.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

An estimator by room class and stay that splits hospital charges from doctors’ fees, explains deposits and guarantee letters, and becomes an overseas enquiry.

  • What we saw

“Medically reviewed” with a date appears on two sites, and none shows the next review.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

Every guide shows its reviewer, the review date and the next review, kept current from a staff review queue.

  • What we saw

Two Malaysian sites set body text below 4.5:1 contrast, and one sets its navigation at 10 to 11 px.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

Body text at 17 px and 17:1 contrast, nothing under 12 px, and plain zeros in every price, time and phone number.

  • What we saw

Indonesia is Malaysia’s largest healthcare-travel market, and eight sites offer a regional language, but none lets an overseas patient follow an enquiry after sending it.

    What Lightwell Specialist Hospital does

Bahasa Indonesia pages with English counterparts, an enquiry that carries the estimate, a staff case board, and tracking in Indonesian.

Platform3

  • Site search
  • Malay and Indonesian pages
  • Privacy notice and consent

Built in part

  • WhatsApp contact: numbers on the footer and contact pages, without a chat widget.
  • Buying a package online: book with a date and a price, and pay at the centre; no payments in a demo.
  • Priced surgical and maternity packages: honest estimates by room class instead, since doctors’ fees cannot be discounted.
  • A price guarantee: a written estimate and counselling steps; no guarantee is promised.
  • Patient education brochures: library guides and preparation pages, without downloads.
  • Patient advocacy: a named patient relations officer in the complaint flow.
  • Governance and investor information: conduct, whistleblowing and data protection; a private hospital has no investor pages.

Left out, and why

  • A patient app, a patient portal and records requests (3): outside a website, and the build holds no records, results or prescriptions.
  • Video consultations: they need clinical infrastructure.
  • A symptom checker, ask-a-doctor answers and a chatbot (3): they drift into medical advice.
  • Outcome statistics: the advertising rules require real Malaysian data.
  • CSR promotion and loyalty schemes (2): the advertising rules bar them.
  • Overseas offices, clinical research and scholarships (3): a concept hospital would have to invent them.
  • Video and online bill payment (2): no video production or real payments in a demo.

Design research

How the leading sites look, and what we took

We measured the fonts, colours and layouts of the hospitals we studied, then applied what the best of them share in an original design, on the public site and in the staff desk.

  • Across the leading sites

Sans-serif headings on 13 of the 15 sites, with headlines mostly 30 to 43 px.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, drawn for low-vision readers, with headlines of 38 to 70 px and Source Serif 4 for long reading.

  • Across the leading sites

Body text of 14 to 20 px, with two Malaysian sites below 4.5:1 contrast.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

Body text at 17 px and 17:1 contrast, nothing under 12 px, and plain zeros in prices and times.

  • Across the leading sites

A cool primary colour on 12 sites, a warm accent on 7, and red kept for emergencies.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

Indigo for actions, which no site studied uses, an apricot accent, block colours that show where things are, and red only for emergencies.

  • Across the leading sites

A campaign carousel first, then task tiles.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

Tasks first, set as a lobby directory with building codes.

  • Across the leading sites

Stock photos of doctors and patients.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

One original image set with the advertising board’s statement wherever care is shown, and monogram tiles for doctors.

  • Across the leading sites

Wayfinding scattered across photos, profiles and pop-ups.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

A system: codes on everything, a section drawing of the campus, and floor plans with routes.

  • Across the leading sites

    Carousels and autoplay.

    In Lightwell Specialist Hospital

Motion only where it helps, and none when reduced motion is set.

Rules it follows

The business rules, built in

The prototype enforces each of these, so you can test them yourself.

Advertising a healthcare facility

  • No superlatives, comparisons or promotions; a wording check blocks them before staff can publish
  • No patient testimonials
  • The advertising board’s approval number in the footer, marked as a sample

Presenting doctors

  • Facts only: registration numbers, qualifications, languages and clinic sessions
  • Passport-size monogram tiles instead of photos
  • Guides and talks never invite readers to book their reviewer or speaker

Charges and fees

  • Doctors’ fees shown apart from hospital charges, under the fee schedule
  • A published price change logs a note to inform the advertising board
  • Medicine prices displayed under the 2025 price-marking order

Personal data

  • Explicit, unticked consent on every form that collects health information
  • Marketing consent asked for separately
  • A privacy notice in Malay and English with a named data protection officer

Complaints and safety

  • Complaints acknowledged within 3 working days and answered within 10
  • Every form says to call 999 or come to the emergency department
  • No records, results, prescriptions or symptom checker

Connected roles

One action, every screen

Every role works on the same records, so one person’s action shows up for the others.

  1. 1

A patient books a cardiologist’s slot, and the slot disappears for everyone else while the appointments desk sees the request beside that day’s clinic list.

  2. 2

The desk offers another time, and the patient’s tracking page shows it with a button to accept.

  3. 3

The patient opens “where to go”, and the floor plan lights up the suite with a route from the entrance or the car park.

  4. 4

An overseas patient turns an estimate into an enquiry in Bahasa Indonesia, and moving it to “plan sent” on the case board changes their tracking page.

  5. 5

Staff change a screening price, and the public pages show it while the compliance log adds a note to inform the advertising board.

  6. 6

Staff move a doctor’s clinic session, and the profile, the directory and the booking slots follow it.

  7. 7

A complaint gets a reference and the inbox counts down its 3 and 10 working days, and marking a guide reviewed updates the date on the public article.

Core systems

What this build is made of

These are systems we build repeatedly — each links to every other project that contains it, so you can compare implementations before deciding what you need.

Industry: Clinics & hospitals

Unique to this build

Built specifically for this project rather than assembled from the shelf.

  • Floor plans with routes

Every floor of both sites drawn in SVG, with the route, written steps and walking time to any suite.

  • Cost estimator

A range by room class and stay, with hospital charges and doctors’ fees on separate lines, that turns into an overseas enquiry.

  • Advertising wording check

Staff cannot publish superlatives, comparisons or promotions, in English, Malay or Indonesian.
